ebpSource sponsors successful Broad Peak ascent for flood relief victims
ebpSource is extremely proud to have been involved in this summer’s successful six-man British Broad Peak 2011 Expedition to the Karakoram, Pakistan. Standing at 8,051 metres Broad Peak (previously known as K3) is a close neighbour to K2 and the 12th highest peak on the planet. It forms part of the Greater Himalaya range.
The British Broad Peak 2011 Expedition was a first attempt at an 8,000 metre summit for each of the six British team members. They made it doubly difficult for themselves by attempting the climb without the use of supplementary oxygen or high-altitude porters.
As a lead sponsor, ebpSource played a key role in support of the project, which has so far helped to raise over three thousand pounds for charity. These funds are being used by the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) to assist victims of the 2010 Pakistan floods.
Scott Mackenzie, an ebpSource consultant, and fellow climber Koldo Zubimendi (a member of an adjoining Basque team attempting to peak the mountain) both achieved the Broad Peak summit on the 25th July 2011. In doing so, Scott became only the ninth Briton in history to successfully scale the mountain. Harsh and restrictive weather conditions meant that further summit attempts were not possible for the team.
The climb itself was not the only challenge; it followed more than twelve days of obstacle-rich travelling within Pakistan just to reach the mountain base camp. This included a combination of on and off-road driving, in a variety of vehicles, plus a number of days trekking across glaciers. The team were able to experience first-hand the devastation caused by last year’s floods.
Says Scott: "Although summit day was quite exhausting with no sleep the night before, and keeping warm was difficult, I’m so pleased to have made it to the top. It was a real team effort and an amazing experience.”
